Course Description: This course teaches approximately 250 new kanji that are commonly used in JLPT (The Japanese Language Proficiency Test) at Level 2. The course traces the development of kanji from the sources in China, as well as the etymology of the kanji as a memory aid. Emphasis is placed on a rounded approach to kanji acquisition, allowing students to immediately apply their new kanji to sentences in Japanese. Text: Basic Kanji Book by Chieko Kano, Yuri Shimizu, Hiroko Takenaka, and Eiko Ishii (Vol.2). Assessment: class attendance (30%), midterm exam (20%), final exam (20%), and quizzes (30%). Note: “Intermediate” Japanese language levels at the host university are comparable to UC upper-division courses.
