Course Description: This course is an introduction to the basic issues of modern Japanese history, with emphasis on both the international and domestic factors that shaped Japan’s historical development. Lectures cover the period from the 1840s to the present. The course examines not only political and economic history, but also social and cultural developments, as the latest studies on modern Japan show the entangled relations of state and society, as well as the complexities of foreign relations and domestic politics. Text: A MODERN ISTORY OF JAPAN: FROM TOUBAWA TIMES TO THE PRESENT. Assessment: midterm exam (40%), final exam (40%), participation (20%).
