Course Description: Since the 1990s gender studies has focused largely on the mythology surrounding gender and how gender relations affect the family system, the labor force, and the cognitive system. In this course, besides learning what gender in the modern world is and how the concept developed especially after the late 1960s, students discuss Japanese gender issues in the Equal Employment Opportunity Law (EEOL) and the Gender-Equality Law, media and journalism, art and literature, psychoanalysis and religion, sports and entertainment, education and career making. Assessment: midterm exam (30%), papers (30%), participation (20%), and in-class presentation (20%).
