Course Description:
This course takes a closer look at selected local syntactic phenomena to investigate the dimensions of linguistic change and variation. English studies benefit from an abundant linguistic data from that period, which allows for the fine-grained tracking of many phenomena. The course discusses the value of a very small grammatical structure for understanding how English and English(es) become what they are today. Previous experience with CQP and / or corpus is a plus, but not essential.
