Course Description:
This course covers German history during the National Socialist era, 1933 to 1945, as well as German culture of remembrance and commemoration of that period. The class discusses ideological structures and institutions of Nazi dictatorship. In addition, it examines the persecution and imprisonment of political opponents as well as the discrimination, persecution, and killing of German Jews and it also discusses resistance against the Nazi regime. Field-trips to German memorial sites feature prominently in this course and serve to illustrate German ways of remembering this period, and to deepen the historical background.
