Course Description: This course introduces the philosophical thought of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Nkrumah is globally acknowledged as a thinker, pan-Africanist, and statesman. He spearheaded the independence of Ghana from British colonial rule and became Ghana's first Prime Minister and President. He also authored fifteen books and monographs—most of which were on political thought and practice—and played a pivotal role in the founding of the Organization of African Unity, currently known as the African Union. Dr. Nkrumah was as well an accomplished philosopher, but he is less firmly established as such in popular perception. This provides sufficient reason to devote this course to an exploration of his philosophical works and critical perspectives. The course examines Nkrumah's reflections on metaphysics and epistemology, political philosophy and ethics, and meta-philosophical themes like the relationship between philosophy, society, and ideology. It also explores a range of critical perspectives by philosophers and political theorists on Nkrumah's book: Consciencism.
