Course Description: Research in Practice is a project based introduction to the methodology and analysis techniques used in social science research. The topics of this course do not follow the traditional order offered in standard textbooks, but, as the title indicates, follow the order as needed by social science research in practice. Topics covered include research design, ethics, sampling, measurement, and various analysis techniques for associations between variables and differences between groups. Students design an empirical research project, conduct basic descriptive and inferential statistical procedures using the software SPSS, interpret SPSS output, and report the findings following the APA format. This course offers a unique combination of interactive, student-based teaching methods. No traditional textbook is used. Students are required to use various resources to search for relevant information and compile their own personal electronic textbook. The course offers the following formats: group activities, discussion groups, research teams, a data collection event, computer labs, and student presentations.
