Course Description: This course compares women's lives across cultural, religious, space, and time boundaries, from prehistory to the present, selecting specific periods and areas to reveal critical aspects of women's lives. Topics include the emergence of women's studies; images of women in the ancient world in the political, economic, social, and cultural context; women in the medieval economic, political, and social order; profiles of achievement in Europe, Asia, and Africa; the political, economic, social, and cultural changes and their effects on women during the Industrial Revolution, the Age of Enlightenment, World War I, and World War II; and significant movements in Europe, America, Asia, and Africa, including Marxism, socialism, the feminist movement, and liberalism. It also covers topics on women in Africa; queen mothers, priestesses, and other office holders in African society; the impact of colonialism; and women in postcolonial Africa.
