Course Description: The modern China is an age when Chinese traditional civilization clashed and blended with Western and modern cultures. It is also a great era that saw the birth of a series of highly influential thinkers. As the finest minds of their times, these intellectuals reflected deeply upon the heritage of national culture, explored the future of China as well as the humankind, constructed innovative theoretical systems and offered new cultural nourishment for the subsistence and development of the whole nation. This course offers in-depth analyses of a list of these renowned thinkers, including K`ang Yu-wei, Yen Fu, T`an Ssu-t`ung, Chang T`ai-yen, Sun Yat-sen, Wang Kuo-wei, Ts`ai Yuan-pei, Ch`en Tu-hsiu, Hu Shih, Li Ta-chao, Liang Shu-ming, Fung Yu-lan and Mao Tse-tung. By taking into consideration the forming processes of their thoughts, their distinctions as well as characteristics, this course provides a clear profile of intellectual figures, branches and trends in modern China.
