Course Description: This class is designed as an intensive means to improve Chinese reading and writing ability at the advanced level. In-class exercises involve reading a Chinese essay and composing written answers in Chinese within a short time frame (20-30 minutes) about the content and the structure of the essay. For homework, students must memorize word-for-word sentences which include specific vocabulary and idioms. The point of this is to incorporate these terms into daily writing and speaking, and thus demonstrate a deep understanding of advanced Chinese. Students also compose long form essays and edit previous original works. Texts: selected essays by the professor. Assessment: 30% memorization presentations in class; 70% homework (essays, editing essays, writing vocabulary).
