Course Description: This course is an overview of popular music, defined by music with definitive characteristics, from pre-Republic era to the modern day. It includes discussion of trends, technology, styles, and external and internal influences. The topics include: Original sound era 1900-1949; First generation music – design, singer attitudes; Changing sound era 1950-1979; “Oriental Red” theater – meaning and effects; Era of new elements 1980-1985; Creativity in traditional folk songs and academics; Multi-art concerts and effect on popular music; origin and proliferation of popular music; Beginning of large scale music industry; “Northwest Wind”; Chinese rock and roll”; MTVs; 1990 and after, modern music trends; Korean and Japanese impact on Chinese music Texts: Zhe Sun, HISTORY OF CHINESE POPULAR MUSIC; Lin Fu, TWENTY YEARS OF POP MUSIC. Assessment: attendance 5%; midterm paper 35%; final exam 60%.
