Course Description:
This course offers a study of modern Celtic minority languages including Scots Gaelic and Breton with specific focus on Irish and Welsh languages. The course explores the idea that these minority languages have been marginalized politically, socially, and culturally by the dominant languages of English and French in their respective societies. The course discusses topics including: the political and social problems facing these languages; the endangerment of these languages; steps towards revitalization; numerical strength or weakness of Celtic languages; their legal status and rights both nationally and at EU level; their position in social domains, particularly in the electronic and printed media, and their position within the educational system; the visibility of the languages; and bilingualism/multilingualism. The course requires basic knowledge of at least one modern Celtic language as a prerequisite.
