Course Description: This course offers a study of modern Celtic minority languages including Scots Gaelic and Breton with specific focus on Irish and Welsh languages. The course discusses topics including: the political and social problems facing these languages; the endangerment of these languages; steps towards revitalization; numerical strength or weakness of Celtic languages; their legal status and rights both nationally and at EU level; their position in social domains, particularly in the electronic and printed media, and their position within the educational system; the visibility of the languages; and bilingualism/multilingualism.
