Course Description: This course offers an introduction to microeconomics for students of the geosciences. The course discusses the principles of microeconomics that form the basics of a substantial number of innovation theories. The course explores topics including the influence of innovation on supply and demand; behavior of consumers and producers; the role of innovation in various market structures such as competitive markets, monopoly, and oligopoly; utility maximization by consumers and profit maximization by producers; and the influence of governmental policy, such as taxes or subsidies on welfare, innovation, and sustainability. Students calculate elasticities, consumer and producer surplus, and prices and outputs in various market structures. The course consists of weekly lectures, discussions, and assignments.
