Course Description: This course offers a study of key concepts and principal theoretical debates concerning globalization and the unprecedented complexity that marks social life today. The course examines topics including catalysts of globalization and sociocultural complexity, migration, the upsurge of religious movements, the rise of transnationalism, community formation, identity construction, cultural innovation versus cultural survival, and the shifting relationship between agency and structure. The course consists of lectures, readings, workgroups, group work, and assignments.
