Course Description: This course is a period-by-period survey, from the Classical period through the 20th century, of important European and American literary texts and a couple films, which introduce various images of China in the West, and show how these images have changed over the centuries. This course also develops methodologies for the study of images. The course uses various texts and the reading assignment for each week include about 100 pages of English text. For many of the texts there are Chinese translations which can also be read. Each week oral and written reports are assigned for the text to be studied. These reports can be in either English or Chinese. Assessment: Attendance and class participation: 20%; written reports 40%; oral reports 40%.
