Course Description: The main goal of this course is to teach a brief history and the basic disciplines of Chinese calligraphy characters. The course covers the following: introduction, how to hold the brush, the way of the brush, the wielding and use of the brush, the eight principles of Yong, how to combine different strokes and styles to achieve beauty, completing an art of composition (understanding the relationship between the black and white on the paper), inscriptions and signatures, seals on a script, clerical script, standard true script (kaishu), semi-cursive script, and cursive grass style (caoshu). The first half of the course is devoted to basic techniques. The second half is dedicated to a brief history of Chinese calligraphy. Students are also guided through the actual practice of writing focusing on using the standard true script; however, other styles are practiced. Assessment: attendance and daily homework, final: one complete work of calligraphy.
