Course Description: | This course offers a study of subcultures in music, identity, and media. The course explores the subject of subculture theory using several different methodologies including the semiotic method, the cultural studies approach, the ethnographic angle of incidence, and theories concerning online fanship. The course examines topics including: the manner in which media and mediation contribute to the foundation of subcultures; the ways in which magazines, music, radio, TV, film, the internet, gamesound tracks, and ring tones create processes of affective signification and identification; and the involvement of the human body in subcultures. The course consists of lectures, seminars, discussions, and presentations. This course requires knowledge in the subject area of music as a prerequisite. |
