Course Description: This course offers a study of television's transition as a medium. The course explores technologies, regulatory regimes, industrial practice, and national histories of the medium that have encouraged us to imagine the medium as relatively stable. These forces characterize the emergence of new media generally, and play a vital role in ongoing debates about media identity, change, and the differences and convergence of television and other media. The course discusses the medium of television, its history, and the comparative power of various analytic paradigms for making sense of television's dynamic state and thinking about its future. The course focuses on the most recent transformations of television in the digital environment. The course consists of lectures, seminars, and group work. The course requires background knowledge of the history and theory of television as a prerequisite.
