Course Description: | This course offers a study of European Law. The course reviews both important institutional questions of European Law and the general legal system of European Substantive Law, such as the judicial norms and regulations on the free movement of goods, workers, persons and services, and harmonization and coordination of national legislation. The course explores topics including the influence of European Law on national law, the economic system of the Treaties, the provisions on the four freedoms, legal protection, European Institutions involved in the integration process, as well as the objective of harmonization, legal bases and instruments of harmonization, the implementation of EU directives into national law, direct effect, and the relationship between harmonization and the Treaty rules on free movement. Students examine the general system of EU competition rules; formal competition law, such as the enforcement of the EU competition rules; the role of the European Commission therein; the procedures and problems of legal protection; and substantive competition law, such as cartels, abuse of a dominant position, merger control, and state aid. The course requires that students have completed an extensive background of courses in the field of legal students, and have basic knowledge of European law as prerequisites. |
