Course Description: Statistics is the study of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data, and plays an essential role in scientific research, finance, and many other areas. This course introduces the theoretical underpinnings of statistics. Students learn probability and distribution theory on which modern statistical practice is founded, and how to apply it to answer important practical questions raised in medical research, ecology, the media, and more. The course covers random variables, standard distributions, bivariate distributions, transformations, convergence of random variables, normal random samples, an introduction to statistical inference, methods of parameter estimation and inference, and hypothesis testing.
