Course Description: This course integrates the analysis and modeling of common types of biological data with effective ways of communicating the results to a range of different audiences. The course builds upon and extends students' knowledge of statistical techniques, and when and how to apply them to biological data. Students are introduced to some common mathematical models used in biology to predict complex biological outcomes, and they use a hands-on approach to learning R programming for data analysis. Without the ability to communicate results, the effort involved in obtaining them is rendered useless, hence the course has a strong emphasis on learning to clearly articulate statistical methods and results in writing and speaking so they are readily understood by other scientists and non-scientists, such as in industry or government. As well as specifically addressing the challenge of how to write and speak about complex topics such as uncertainty and sampling, this course equips students with a variety of fundamental writing and speaking skills which lead to improved performance in communication tasks in other courses and the workplace.
