Course Description: This course analyzes crime, crime control, and punishment in their historical, social, and political contexts. Students examine the major theoretical perspectives on the explanation of crime and deviance as well as the role and functions of punishment. The course also considers a range of central issues in order to understand crime and criminal justice including: the history and sociology of prisons, punishment and policing, basic elements of criminal law, and the criminal justice system.
