Course Description: This course provides a broad overview of the natural system of Japan and its vicinity. The first section of the course introduces the physical features of Japan and its surroundings. The second section reviews how people and nature interact, reflecting on the past, examining the present, and identifying the directions for the future. In so doing, how the human-nature interactions in Japan differ (or do not differ) are compared from that of other regions of the world. This course is intended for anybody who has interest in the natural system of Japan. Assessment: participation (10%), worksheets (25%), midterm exam (25%), final exam (40%).
