Course Description: This course teaches exchange students about different aspects of Japanese culture. The first part of the course covers Japanese culture around the student, pop culture, and language. Understanding of Japanes culture is deepened by tracing the history and pattern of Kimono, and popular songs from postwar period to the present. By examining Kansai dialects and youth words used in everyday life on campus, students also learn the mechanism by which youth words are created and how it is different from standard language. The second part of the course introduces Shintoism and Zen Buddhism looking at their origin and relationship with Japanese lifestyle.
