Course Description: This course examines the uneven development of liberalism in the post-Cold War world and its impact on international relations. Focus is on the development of a research program and political beliefs around the core idea that democracy is a “different” and “better” form of state. Democratic peace theory has emerged as the most prominent version of liberal internationalism at present, with its findings being influential in academic and policymaking circles. The course considers a range of different arguments for and against democratic peace theory, as well as related developments in liberal internationalism, such as democracy promotion, democracy in international law, and the role of democracy in peace building. Assessment: Final exam (40%), research paper (60%).
