Course Description: This course deepens the understanding of the governance system and public policies of the European Union (EU) with a specific focus on the role and power of EU’s supranational officials called “Eurocrats” and national officials involving in the system of governance. The course begins with a discussion of the historical origins of the European Communities (ECs), the original design and the subsequent development of the institutional framework, the major public policies, and the distinctive nature of the legal order. It then examines and assesses the recent development of European integration theories, focusing upon liberal intergovernmentalism, updated versions of neo-functionalist/supranationalist theories, and new institutionalist approaches. Assessment: Attendance and participation (50%), presentation (50%)
