Course Description: Survey of Japanese art history. Classes cover prehistoric art and artifacts, Buddhist art, art of the court and warrior class, popular culture expressions, and the transformation of Japanese art in the modern era. Representative works of architecture, painting, sculpture and craft are analyzed in detail for their visual and symbolic properties. Art works are considered in relation to social, economic, and political contexts. Materials and techniques specific to Japanese art are also highlighted. The objective of the class is to learn the characteristic techniques, themes, and styles of Japanese art, and how international exchange affects production and reception of art objects and styles.
