Course Description: The present society has been changing very drastically due to the rapid development of information technology, network infrastructure, and the free flow of information. This course begins by looking at the basic function of human communication and then examines how the information/network society came into being. The lectures also focus on some important historical topics: the 17th century Europe in which scientific thinking began to have its foundation and the 18th century when the free exchange of information/knowledge started to play an important role in the formation of modern information/knowledge industries. The students will discuss not only some serious issues related to SNS and the network society, but the current worldwide jobless situations caused by automation. Assessment: Midterm exam (30%), final exam (20%), essay/5-7 pages (20%), attendance and participation (30%).
