Course Description: The course provides an overview of Japanese cultural history from the 6th century to 1800. It explores early myth-histories, the Tale of Genji and the refined court society that inspired it, warrior tales, the world of medieval Buddhism, and the vibrant culture of the Tokugawa period: kabuki and bunraku performances, haiku, the interaction of merchants and samurai, and the social playground of the pleasure quarters. Course materials are not limited to literary artifacts: they include visual art, historical documents in translation, works of criticism, films, and documentaries. Assessment: Exams (30%), reports (50%), attendance and participation (10%).
