Course Description: The English Gothic novel is the original literature of fear. This seminar explores the literary and cultural motives behind the terror inspired by some prominent examples of Gothic narrative up to the end of the 19th century. This fear can be profitably related to such issues as Romanticism, individualism, gender, education, evolution, and social class. Readings are provided and include works by Ann Radcliffe, Matthew Lewis, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Lewis Stevenson, and Bram Stoker. Assessment: three analytical papers (50%), participation (50%).
