Course Description: This course is one in a series on contemporary Japanese culture. It introduces the culture of Japan through the reading of short stories written by modern authors and discussing topics such as population, bathing practices, religions, and whaling. The subject of lectures includes such topics as the history of Japanese castles, the sustaining of traditional cultural activities, and the development of modern art. Readings focus on short stories written by such modern authors Fumiko Enchi, Osamy Dazai, and Kenji Miyazawa. Assessment: class participation, weekly web forum assignments, term paper and presentation.
