Course Description: | This is the first part of â€˜Quantum Field Theory for Non-Specialistsâ€™ aimed at understanding the basic principles of quantum filed theory without skipping steps. Part I covers Lorentz Group and Lorentz Invariance, Lorentz-invariant wave equations, and Dirac Theory. It then starts to cover field quantization.The goal of the part is to acquire solid basic knowledge of relativistic quantum mechanics. In order to do so, one needs to understand the space-time structure given by the special relativity, and to extend it to Dirac theory where 4 component spinors are introduced. The course is based on a lecture note which is posted on we, and we will follow it closely. A home work is assigned in principle every class which is due one week later. It is recommended not to write down everything in class; rather, one should focus on the contents of the lecture by listening to lecture and reading the lecture notes. The idea is to provide a well-structured course where anybody with undergraduate physics knowledge can follow if they attend all classes and work on homework.
