Course Description: This course examines ideologies of “everyday life” and uses gender studies and cultural studies approaches such as feminism, masculinity studies, and queer studies as methodologies to decode the ways in which we construct our realities in contemporary society. In our overview of the vast and interdisciplinary field of gender studies, the course examines themes of bias, equality, hegemony, marginalization and minorities, social justice and human rights; and other other topics relating to how gender structures our reality and how gender studies can be used to critique power and the institutionalization of inequality. Through lectures and discussions of historical examples drawn mainly from a Pacific and Asian context, the intersection between race, ethnicity, region, sexual orientation, class, age, health, and many other factors, such as colonization and globalization are observed. Assessment: Midterm exam (20%), final exam (30%), attendance and participation (20%), and 3 papers (10% each).
