Course Description: This is an elementary Japanese language course intended for students with no previous Japanese language study. It covers Japanese alphabets (hiragana and katakana), 100 basic kanji, and how to read and write basic Japanese syllabary. They also study such conversational situations as self-introduction, shopping, talking about daily life, taking a train, asking for directions, and using the post office. By the end of this course students should have mastered basic grammar and 800 basic words, be able to engage in simple conversation, and be able to read and write short simple sentences. Text: Chapters 1-25 of 3A Corporation, MINNA NO NIHONGO I. Assessment: Attendance, participation, in-class quizzes (50%), final exam (50%).
