Course Description: This course analyzes part of American culture called “postmodren.” Postmodernism is a philosophico-cultural movement which started in the 1960s and culminated in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s. It includes not only art and philosophical movements but also a variety of cultural events from architecture to hypermedia. The course closely examines films, novels, and works of popular culture such as comics and songs, the notion of postmodernism and how postmodern culture has been constructed and developed in the second half of the twentieth century. Texts: Selection from “LOST IN THE FUNHOUSE” by Barth, John (1968); Selection from “POSTMODERNISM OR THE CULTURAL LOGIC OF LATE CAPITALISM by Jameson, Fredric (1991); Selection from “SHOAH” by Lanzmann, Claude. (1985); ENTROPY by Pynchon, Thomas (1960). Assessment: Exam (70%), report (20%), and attendance (10%).
