Course Description: What is required of communication through interpreting? What constitutes equivalence across different languages and cultures? The course introduces the basic theories and notions in interpreting, as well as the unique processes arising from the differences in their media and objectives. It provides a foundation for the understanding and practice of interpretation. What is the difference between translation and interpreting? What unique challenges does interpreting have and how can they be analyzed by using relevant theories? This course takes various approaches to find answers to these questions in order to understand the nature of interpreting as intercultural communication. Given the increased demand for interpreters towards the Tokyo Olympics, the issue of interpreter competency is also be discussed. Guest lectures as well as mock-interpreting sessions are planned as needed.
