Course Description: This course examines the cultures and societies of Southeast Asia as a justifiably independent region from a socio-political and cultural point of view. The course pursues two aims: to present that Southeast Asia consists of a variety of cultures; that these cultures share some common elements as the region shares a similar natural environment, human ecology, cultural traits and historical experiences. Highlighted in the course are cultural dynamics, i.e., how each society has conceptualized and adapted to its natural environment and how they have responded by creating appropriate socio-cultural systems and tackling external challenges. References: SOUTHEAST ASIA IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A READER by Clive J. Christie; A HISTORY OF SOUTHEAST ASIA by D.G.D Hall; SOUTHEAST ASIA: CONCISE HISTORY. Assessment: term paper (80%) and a presentation (20%).
