Course Description: This course explores contemporary efforts to “organize” the unruly sovereign state system, while discussing if international organizations such as the United Nations can contribute towards solutions of common problems. Other topics include Japanese foreign policy toward the United Nations and Japanese ODA policy, the evolution of multilateral peace-keeping operations, and international efforts to promote human rights and economic development. Assessment: two midterm exams (96%) and a final exam (4%).
