Course Description: This course is an introduction to Indian religious thought. It discusses the historical development of Indian philosophical thought from the perspective of the controversy between Brahmanical schools and Buddhist schools. The objective is to understand basic religious thought in East Asia through reading original texts translated into English. Texts: BUDDHISM:ITS ESSENCE AND DEVELOPMENT by Edward Conze; A HISTORY OF INDIAN BUDDHISM: FROM SAKYAMUNI TO EARLY MAHAYANA by Akira Hirakawa. Assessment: attendance (20%), and a final exam (80%).
