Course Description: This course examines public finance with focus on how costly and difficult it is for government to acquire information necessary to make models of public finance yield usable results. Topics include basic public finance models for taxation, and public expenditures; role of government as a substitute for the market but with a need to test the viability of chosen government policies with cost/benefit analysis or against the existing private institutional alternatives; advantages and disadvantages of different taxation policies and methods; basic criteria with which government policies can be evaluated.
