Course Description: This course develops critical instructional skills necessary for a language educator. The course reviews approaches and techniques for the teaching of second or foreign languages from the perspective of linguistics and language acquisition research. The course also focuses on a repertoire of basic teaching techniques in the various skill areas--listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and gives students experience in designing and implementing lessons, the what to teach and how to teach, for a variety of educational settings. The first half of the course develops theoretical understanding of language processing and language acquisition with a focus on each of the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Issues and debates involved in instruction of each of the skills, especially in secondary education in Japan are considered.
