Course Description: This course provides an overview of the socio-historical and intellectual development of Japanese Buddhism from its beginnings up until the present day. A particular emphasis is placed on addressing the question as to why, despite Japan’s rich and diverse Buddhist culture, the majority of contemporary Japanese know very little about Buddhism and, on a daily basis, have little to no interaction with Buddhism proper. Lectures are supplemented with other forms of media (video, etc.) to provide a more concrete understanding of the history of Buddhism in the Japanese archipelago. It is recommended that students attempt to familiarize themselves with some of the basic teachings of Buddhism in general and also come with a solid grounding in Japanese history. Assessment: Two reports (70%), attendance and participation (30%).
