Course Description: This course examines the various ways anthropologists have theorized religious belief and practice and challenges these ideas by exploring the vast diversity of religious forms. Starting with the major theories of Durkheim, Weber, and others, students focus on what anthropologists have identified as the key elements of religious forms cross-culturally. It also investigates the debates around these ideas. Special emphasis is on the continuing salience of religious ideas and identities in modernity.
