Course Description: This course is a survey of world music outside the western European tradition and focuses on promoting an understanding of music through aspects of culture and society. It covers folk, classical, regional, and contemporary music from around the world, such as from the Middle East, including Greece and Turkey; Eastern Europe; India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan; East Asia and Southeast Asia; Australia; Africa; and the Americas. The course includes elements of music theory, including music notation. Students attend at least one live music concert. Texts: William Alves, MUSIC OF THE PEOPLES OF THE WORLD. Assessment: attendance, two class tests, concert report, final exam.
