Course Description: This course offers a study of the ways in which the European Union (EU) is a successful international actor. An overview of the EU, along with its actors and procedures in international relations, is provided. The course examines theoretical approaches to the analysis of different aspects of EU external relations and their international “player quality.” These foundations and approaches are utilized to explore various areas of “neighborly” EU relations. Basic knowledge about the processes and structures of European integration is reviewed and current research on the external relations of the EU is addressed. Finally, key policy areas as well as their historical development are discussed.
