Course Description: | This course offers a study of the representation of National Socialism in film. Students review film analysis and the history of the Third Reich, and discuss a representative selection of films dealing with National Socialism. The course is divided into three parts. The first part of the course focuses on analyzing propaganda techniques in both fascist and anti-fascist propaganda films released between 1933 and 1945. The second part of the course examines different approaches to dealing with the Holocaust. The third part of the course explores contemporary films such as TRIUMPH OF THE WILL, HITLERYOUTH QUEX, THE GREAT DICTATOR, SHOAH, SCHINDLER'S LIST, and INGLOURIOUS BASTARDS which reinvent history in quite an unorthodox way. Students analyze films, read academic texts, participate in a workgroup with a brief presentation, actively participate in discussions, and take a written examination. |
