Course Description: This course explores different elements of contemporary media and its surrounding cultures in Japan. This includes engaging with the history of different “popular cultures” in modern Japan, before examining more contemporary examples, such as “otaku media." The course specifically focuses on anime and manga and their current rise to fame as official symbols of contemporary Japanese culture. It then moves on to more “mainstream” Japanese popular cultures and looks at the media they work through, such as film, TV, and magazines. Classes feature lectures, visual material such as clips and episodes of animation, and group discussions on certain themes. At the end of term, students give a presentation about an aspect of contemporary Japanese culture that they are interested in, and use the comments and discussion following their presentations in class to solidify the argument they make in their end of term paper. Assessment: final exam (20%), presentation (20%), participation(30%) and attendance (30%).
