Course Description: This course is for students who have completed and mastered elementary level studies. This course develops an intermediate level proficiency in reading comprehension skill and vocabulary. Students read various passages on current topics in newspapers and magazines, and learn new expressions used in news media as well as current Japanese social issues. They also read literature, such as KUMO NO ITO by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, and learn to understand fairly complicated sentence structures, and to develop an understanding of Japanese culture, customs and history. Emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of intermediate level sentence structures and vocabulary. Text: TEMA BETSU CHUKYU KARA MANABU NIHONGO by Reiko Arai et al. Assessment: class attendance, class participation, homework assignments, quizzes, midterm exam and final exams. Note: Intermediate Japanese language levels at the host university are comparable to UC upper-division language courses.
