Course Description: This course explores the diversity of ways in which meaning can be expressed linguistically in different languages, as well as of what constitutes evidence for meaning. Topics covered include the relations between meaning, definition, reference, and mental representation; the structure of the vocabulary; the relation between meaning and use; meaning and logic; the semantics of grammatical categories; meaning typology; meaning variation and change; and scepticism about meaning as a category in the theorization of language.
