Course Description: This course is a survey of the socioeconomic and historical conditions that gave birth to African-American theater. It is designed to introduce African-American theater while skimming through the history of blacks in America form the 17th century to the 21st century. While it chronicles the historical struggles of African Americans, the main focus is to understand African-American theater by exploring themes in selected plays from 1959-2001. The selected plays offer a vivid picture of the political and social reality that impelled their existence.
